Let's be honest, a business is started to make money. My issue with many businesses is that they put making money above the customer's needs. As a customer I don't want to be treated that way, so why would I treat my customers that way?
Here is our commit to our customers - We will support you with whatever services you need that are in our scope of business. We will design those services in such a manner that you can maintain them yourself when and if you choose to do that. If necessary, we can and will provide training to internal personnel so that they can provide the day to day operations. Basically, we are going to get things done.
Even though some of these practices could cost us monthly revenue, we do not want you locked into our company because of some technological reason. I feel the best way to keep a customer is for them to be able to walk away easily. It keeps us on our toes, and keeps us customer focused.
